Union Minister reviews Dal conservation work

The Union Minister of State for Urban Development, Dr. Saugata Roy today conducted an extensive tour of the Dal Lake and also visited golden Lake Dole Demb area to review the ongoing works.

The Union Minister was briefed about the progress achieved on the conversation measures like Sewerage Treatment, laying of trunk, lateral/secondary sewer network, working of existing STPs and progress in respect of new STPs coming up at Brari Numbal and Nallah Amir Khan.

Dr. Roy was also briefed about the progress achieved in catchment area development, cleaning of inlet and outlet channels as well as opening of blocked channels and restoration of springs.

Amir Khan bowled over by Kashmir beauty

Bollywood mega star Aamir Khan was bowled over by the beauty of Kashmir on his recent visit to the valley.
Aamir was in Srinagar after more than a decade and was so impressed with the breathtaking beauty of the valley that he hopes filmmakers return here "like the good old times".

Aamir Khan arrived in Kashmir on Wednesday and visited the famous floating vegetable gardens in Dal Lake.
“I have come to Kashmir after more than 10 years. Last time I came here to shoot 'Mann' (1999). The place is wonderful, the people are nice and hospitable,” Aamir told reporters during his visit to the Dal Lake.
“I hope Bollywood starts shooting films here like the good old times. My uncle (filmmaker Nasir Husain) used to shoot his films in Kashmir,” he added.

Some parts of his super duper hit 3 Idiots were filmed in Ladakh region of the state, but he couldn't come to the valley then.

“We went directly to Leh to shoot 3 Idiots and I did not get an opportunity to visit the valley that time,” said the 46-year-old.

Aamir said he is on a pleasure trip here, but his visit to the floating vegetable gardens, a private school and a riverside location in north Kashmir indicated that could be on a recce for his new film.Sources also said that Aamir had shot an ad film for Incredible India Wednesday.

Aamir Khan in Srinagar

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan today concluded his two-day visit to Kashmir valley where he was scouting for possible locations for his untitled film.

The 46-year-old actor, who arrived here yesterday, went to Kangan in central Kashmir Ganderbal district and took a Shikara ride in the famous Dal Lake in the heart of the city, sources close to him said.

Aamir last shot in Kashmir for romantic drama ‘Mann’ in 1998. He is looking for locations for his next venture.

The actor is also likely to visit the valley again to shoot for ‘Incredible India’ advertisement campaign commissioned by Union Tourism Ministry, the sources said.

Aamir said he was happy “to be back in the beautiful valley after a gap of 10 years.”

Centre clears 356 cr for Dal Lake

In a significant development, the Union Cabinet which met under the chairmanship of Prime Minister approved rehabilitation package for the Dal dwellers worth ` 356 crore, today. It is pertinent to mention here that the commitment for this package was made by the Prime Minister during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir last year.

The Housing and Urban Development Department which administers Lakes and Waterways Development Authority, had taken up with Union Ministry of Environment and Forests the project for funding the compensation to be paid to the Dal dwellers for acquisition of their land and structures within the Dal lake. The project has now been cleared after its techno-financial justification.

The Deputy Chief Minister and Minister incharge of the Housing and Urban Development Department Tara Chand, who is in New Delhi and was pursuing sanctioning of this amount since it was taken up with the Union has expressed his gratitude towards the Union Cabinet in general and Prime Minister in particular. It would not have been possible to take developmental initiatives in the State without the support of the Centre, for which the State was indebted to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi also, he said in a statement.

The Deputy Chief Minister also thanked Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who has always been espousing and pursuing such issues of the people of the State in New Delhi.

Dal Lake other water bodies freeze

Summer capital Srinagar recordded coldest night of the winter after the minimum temperature dropped to minus 5.5 degree Celsius this morning while fresh snowfall resulted in freezing of parts of the world famous Dal lake, other water bodies and water taps.

However, world famous ski resort of Gulmarg was coldest in the Kashmir valley after the minimum temperature dropped to minus 16.5 degree.

Srinagar, recorded the coldest night of the season after the minimum temperature dropped to minus 5.5 degree, breaking the previous record of minus 4.9 degree on January 1.

This was more than four notches below than yesterday’s minus 1.0.

Major parts of the world famous Dal Lake were frozen, attracting large number of people, including tourists who were seen taking photographs.

The entire Dal was frozen in 60’s when a jeep crossed from one end to another end on it.

However, in 1986, the lake water was again frozen on which youths played cricket and ice hockey. Besides, tourists took photographs in the middle of the lake.

Official sources said several other water bodies were also frozen due to cold.

People in many areas complained about water shortage as the water taps were also frozen. Due to non-availability of electricity, water could not be lifted to filtration plants and water tanks.

Roof tops, tree tops and electric polls were covered with snow.

A number of people were injured after falling on slippery roads in the city.

Famed ski resort of Gulmarg, which experienced more than five feet of snowfall, also recorded coldest night of the season when the minimum temperature dropped to minus 16.5 degree this morning. Earlier, the highest was minus 12.0 degree recorded on December 23.

However, hundreds of tourists from different parts of the country and abroad were enjoying the snow despite severe cold.

Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir valley on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, which remained closed for the past three days, also recorded coldest minimum temperature of the winter sofar after the temperature dropped to minus 8.4 degree breaking the previous minus 5.6 recorded on December 26.

Kokernag in south Kashmir and Kupwara in north Kashmir also recorded coldest night after the minimum dropped to minus 6.3 and minus 5.6 degree respectively.

However, famed health resort of Pahalgam, base camp of holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas recorded minus 6.0 degree against yesterday’s minus 4.0 degree.

However, the coldest in the tourist resort during this winter was minus 8.8 degree recorded on December 25, last year.

A Met department spokesman said details about temperature in Leh and Kargil of Ladakh region was not available.
