Centre sanctioned 14 tourism centers

National Heritage Trek Expedition

Join hands for revival of Silk route

B. Sharma, Director, Department of Strategic & Regional Studies Dr. Mohammad Monir Alam, Head of Department, Department of Political Sciences Prof. Anurag Gangal, Bureau Chief, Times Now Pardeep Dutta representatives of KASHMIRINK and the organizer of the event Hina, Babar Afzal, representative of student community and KASHMIRINK foundation Abhin-andan.

Referring to the long list of saints and seers who laid the foundation of spiritualism in consonance with the serene environs of the state bound by a series of mountain ranges, Mr. Chib said that these godly men were instrumental in creating the composite culture based mutual brotherhood and religious tolerance. He said that saints and seers from across the world would come to the state to find solace and spirituality setting in the traditions of Sufi way of life which has appealed after generation.

The Minister said that the Sufi shrines from Poonch Rajouri to Kishtwar and Lakhanpur to Leh would prove a great attraction for the people who want to spend peaceful moment to quench their thirst of spirituality.

Speaking on the occasion, Director Information, Kh Renzushah said it were great sufi-saints like Hazrat Bulbul Shah and Hazrat Shah Hamdan who travelled to Kashmir through silk route. He said that importance of 3-K in sufi line lies in mutual brotherhood and communicative route between Kashgar, Kashmir and Kishtwar. He said that route since times immemorial was either start of the silk route or culmination of silk route. Thus the importance of J&K state in the historical perspective with regard o silk route is for more important.

Gandhian Padamshree S. P. Verma while declaring Babar Afzal Gandhian Global Family (GGF) J&K Brand Ambassador said silk route was a symbol of joining people and integration as we all should join our hands together to work for its revival so that we are able to yield the fruits of this route which will provide us opportunities to conduct trade with all central Asian countries.

Bureau Chief of Time Now Pradeep Dutta while acknowledging the importance of silk route said that the present generation is to be made aware about the teachings of sufi saints, based on love and mutual brotherhood by introducing the teachings in the syllabi.

President Chamber of Commerce Mr. Y. B. Sharma underscored the importance of historical silk route and said that strong economy and trade is possible when borders become irrelevant and all people come together in amicable atmosphere to work for peace and prosperity.

Mr. Robin, Director Tourism Jammu said that the Tourism pilgrimage is the new phenomenon throughout the world and J&K which has a composite faith and culture can take full benefit of pilgrimage tourism. He said world is presently looking towards contribution of great sufi saints and their historical past and J&K is rich in all aspects to provide this rich material to all those who have passion for the same.

Director, Department of Strategic & Regional Studies Dr. Mohammad Munir Alam said J&K state was historically important component of silk route and in case this route is revived, it will give highest boost to the economy of our country.

Head of Department, Political Science, Prof. Anurag Gangal said that it is always better to call sufi life as the pure way of life and everybody can play a positive role in propagating the pure teachings of sufi saints so that there remains no scope for elements of hate to exist in the society.

Suchetgarh developing as border tourism destination


The border town of Suchetgarh reverberated with beats of drums and rhythmic steps of dancers to mark the Baisakhi festival celebrations and also the laying of foundation of the Tourist Facility Center, which is being seen by the locals as a boost towards developing the border town as a tourist destination.

Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister for Tourism and culture, has said that Suchetgarh would be developed a mega Border tourist destination for pilgrim tourists visiting Mata Vaishno Devi and other holy shrines of Jammu division, adding that in this regard a project of Rs. 6.39 crore is under implementation for creation of tourist related infrastructure in the area.

Laying foundation of restoration and conservation work of historical Ragunath temple at Suchetgarh in presence of R S Chib, Minister for Medical Education and Youth Services and Sports and Ch Sham Lall, MLA Suchetgarh, Jora said that conservation work of this temple would be completed at a cost of Rs 1.25 crore. He said an amphitheatre would be also constructed in Suchetgarh and instructed concerned authorities to evict the encroached land at the temple site at the earliest for the purpose and celebration of Baisakhi festival would be now made an annual feature in Suchetgarh.

R S Chib said that opening border tourism in Suchetgarh is a remarkable step of the State Government, adding that this would not only boost local economy but also a source of inspiration for coming generation.

He said for promotion of border tourism in Suchetgarh and R S Pura a prestigious project of Rs 6.39 crore is being implemented for creation of different tourist infrastructure facilities. He said under the project several works are being executed which included construction of road to BSF, dormitory, pick and chose restaurant, watch towers, tourist facilitation centre, installation of fountains, landscaping, pathways, shelter places at temple and Peer Baba, development of children parks at R S Pura, improvement of track up to Gharana bird sanctuary, toilet block of old Railway Station R S Pura and Suchetgarh.

Former Minister, Gharu Ram, R S Mehta, Director Tourism Jammu, Arvinder Singh Aman, additional secretary, Cultural Academy, were among others present on the occasion.

Later, the Ministers inaugurated celebration of Baisakhi festival at Suchetgarh. The festival organized by Tourism Department in collaboration with J&K Cultural Academy, was participated by hundreds of people of the area who witnessed cultural programs, which were presented by local artists of the division.

The cultural program ably anchored by Jag Mohan, started with Kud dance by Krishan Singh and Party from Reasi. It was followed by Bhangra dance item by artistes of Navrang Dance Academy, Udhampur. The all female dancers' item was a mix of modern and traditional dance steps. The next presentation was Dogri folk Geetru, which was performed by Ram Prakash and party from Ramnagar. After Manvir Singh Lali and group sang and danced on Punjabi song 'Jamla Jat', Dogri Bhaakh was presented by Bishan Singh and party. The other items, which were highly appreciated by the audience, included Geetru, Bhangra performances by Navrang Dance Academy and Manvir Singh Lali and group.

Jora releases Romancing Himalayan


Minister for Tourism and Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora released a National Travel Magazine 'Romancing Himalayan'' here today.

Among others, Commissioner Secretary Tourism and Culture, Atal Duloo and Editor in Chief, Romancing Himalayan, Babar Afzal were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Jora described the national art, culture, heritage and travel magazine 'Romancing Himalayan', as a great initiative of Mr. Babar, for attracting global visitors twoards Jammu and Kashmir through concepts and brands that are based on strong themes of Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh and Himalayas.

He said that Himalayas have an evolutionary history with a visible dynamism and Romancing Himalayan is all committed to portray this and take it to its lovers who have all their lashes spread on the way to welcome something they have waited for so long.

The Minister said the publication is coming with a broad scope and a multi-coloured spectrum displaying all true, rich and vibrant colours of nature. He said Himalayas are not just mountain ranges, but an institution which finds place in every soul.

Cabinet approves revised package of incentives, to be applicable till Dec 2014


In a major decision, the State Cabinet, which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, here this morning, approved the revised package of incentives for the tourism industry. The package will be applicable till December 2014 and is likely to give major boost to the tourism, which is the back-bone of State’s economy.

Authoritative sources told Jk News that need for revision in the package of incentives for the tourism industry was being felt over the last several years. Not only there was persistent demand from travel trade associations to widen the scope of incentives and extend the benefit to more areas, even the Expert Group on Employment in Jammu and Kashmir headed by Dr C Ranga Rajan had also recommended the revision of list of locations eligible for incentives to encourage private investment.

Moreover, while approving the incentives for two years from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2010, the Chief Minister had also advised to revise the incentives. Accordingly, the Tourism Department worked out a revised package of incentives, which after detailed discussions received the concurrence of the Planning and Development as well as Finance Departments, sources said.

It is pertinent to mention here that Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather, while presenting budget for 2012-13 in the Legislative Assembly on March 5, 2012, had also touched the issue pertaining to the incentives for the tourism industry.

Today, the Cabinet approved the revised package of incentives for tourism industry and extended its applicability till December 2014, sources said while stating that the decision would go a long way in further boosting the tourism industry, which is the back-bone of the State’s economy.

"In the revised package, the list of areas eligible for capital investment subsidy has been expanded substantially and now there is only one list in which both capital investment subsidy and subsidy for conversion of private houses into paying guest houses would be applicable", sources said, adding "capital investment subsidy for new prestigious units involving an investment of Rs 25 crore or more in fixed assets including cost of land has been increased from Rs 60 lakh to Rs 100 lakh".

For purchase of new DG sets, 75 per cent subsidy with a ceiling of Rs 4 lakh would be provided as a one time measure in case of hotels and guest houses. Moreover, subsidy of 50 per cent of cost of equipment used in adventure/ recreation tourism subject to a ceiling of Rs 7 lakh (instead of Rs 5 lakh at present) as one time measure would be available, sources said.

"Fifty per cent subsidy would be available for the replacement/ purchase of new tourist coaches with a ceiling of Rs 7 lakh to the Jammu and Kashmir State permit holders plying their coaches on recognized tourist routes for transportion of tourists", they said while informing that at present the subsidy is available only for replacement of tourist coaches.

A subsidy of 50 per cent of the cost of office automation/ communication networking/ computing system and other equipment with a ceiling of Rs 4 lakh would be reimbursable to the travel agencies registered with the Tourism Department for up-gradation of existing travel agencies or setting up of new travel agencies in the specified tourist areas as one time measure, sources said, adding the other existing incentives will also continue.

Sources said that proposal of the Revenue Department regarding enhancement of honorarium of Numberdars and Chowkidars was not cleared by the Cabinet with the observations that enhancement of honorarium of Numberdars and Chowkidars without fixing any honorarium for Sarpanchs and Panches would not be a wise decision.

"The Rural Development Department was directed by the Cabinet to prepare a proposal in consultation with the Finance Department for fixing honorarium of Sarpanchs and Panches", they said, adding "the proposals regarding enhancement of honorarium of Numberdars and Chowkidars and Sarpanches and Panchs would be jointly considered by the Cabinet".

The Cabinet approved implementation of National Population Register (NPR) Project in the State in place of Aadhar Project.

It also gave nod to the selection of Patwar trainees through J&K Board of Professional Entrance Examination (BOPEE) with the modifications that the examinations will be conducted by BOPEE at the district level by associating the concerned Deputy Commissioners and making selection in accordance with the Reservation Rules.

The Cabinet also approved transfer of State land measuring 192 kanal and 34 marla situated in estates Namble Narkara and Hamchipora of tehsils Budgam and Khag respectively of District Budgam, in favour of Sher-e- Kashmir University of Agriculture Science and Technology, Shalimar, Srinagar, for the establishment of Krishi Vigyan Kendra.

The transfer of land measuring 300 kanal and 5 marla situated in villages of Hrudubani, Lalpora and Mangloora, tehsil Tangmarg for establishment of Krishi Vigyan Kendra and transfer of State land measuring 362 kanal and 13 marla for construction of Krishi Vigyan Kendra at village Marta and construction of residential quarters for employees of Krishi Vigyan Kendra in village Ramnagar also received the nod of Cabinet.

Jora inspects tourism services at Patnitop Sanasar


Minister for Tourism and Culture Nawang Rigzin Jora had an extensive tour of Patnitop and Sanasar tourist resorts today. 

While inspecting various facilities being extended to the tourists at Patnitop, Padora, the Minister gave on the spot instructions to Chief Executive Officer, Patnitop Development Authority for further improving the services in view of upcoming tourist season. He directed the concerned officers for providing all facilities to the tourists in the JKTDC hutments, besides, upgrading some huts. 

The Minister also inspected the new restaurant constructed by JKTDC at a cost of Rs 38 lakh and Alpine Hotel of the Corporation.

The Minister also toured Sanasar resort and inspected the services being extended to the tourists by JKTDC and PDA. He inspected newly constructed restaurant at Sanasar besides taking stock of facilities at tourist bungalow Sanasar. He directed the CEO, PDA for expediting beautification works of Sanasar Lake. The budget accommodation being constructed by PDA was also inspected. 

The Minister also interacted with the tourists and enquired them about the facilities being provided to them.

Cabinet meeting today Govt likely to modify rules governing package of incentives for tourism

In a bid to boost tourism in the State, the Government has decided to modify the existing rules governing the package of incentives for this vital sector and a proposal in this regard is being placed before the State Cabinet, which is meeting under the chairmanship of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, tomorrow morning.Authoritative sources told Jk News that keeping in view various discussions held on the issue during the past quite sometime, the Tourism Department is placing a detailed proposal before the Cabinet for modification in the existing rules governing the package of incentives for tourism as industry.Disclosing that modifications are in supersession to Government orders and the regulations notified in 1995, they said that Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather while presenting budget for the current financial year in the Legislative Assembly on March 5, had stated that Government has revisited the existing package of incentives for tourism units, which includes hotels, motels, houseboats, paying guest houses and cafeterias etc, to announce the new package of incentives.

"The list of areas and locations, where the tourism units will be eligible to get incentives as per new package, is being considerably liberalized and expanded", sources said, adding "a new limit is being proposed for the capital outright investment subsidy. The limit on amount of capital subsidy has also been proposed to be increased in case of prestigious units".

"The proposal of the Tourism Department is also understood to have touched capital subsidy on substantial expansion by the existing units, reimbursement of cost of preparation of Detailed Project Reports, remission of stamp duty on mortgages and subsidy for replacement/ purchase of new tourist coaches etc", sources informed.

Sources said that Cabinet will also consider the proposal of the Revenue Department regarding the enhancement of honorarium of Numberdars and Chowkidars.

"The Revenue Department has proposed enhancement of honorarium of Numberdars from existing rate of Rs 501 per month to Rs 1501 per month and that of Chowkidars from Rs 500 to Rs 1500 per month", sources said while informing that this issue was informally discussed during the last Cabinet meeting and the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah had directed the Revenue Minister, Raman Bhalla to place a formal proposal in this regard before the Cabinet for consideration.

Sources disclosed that Cabinet will also consider and take decision on the proposal of Information Technology Department regarding implementation of National Population Register (NPR) Project in place of Aadhaar Project in the State.

"Union Government after examining various issues pertaining to National Population Register and Aadhaar Project of Unique Identification Authority of India in consultation with Ministry of Home Affairs, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, UID Authority of India and Department of Information Technology, has harmonized the procedures for the two projects", sources said, adding "Jammu and Kashmir Government like most North Eastern States has been advised to ensure complete coverage under the National Population Register only".

"In view of this, the MoU between State Government and the J&K Bank, which was signed on July 18, 2011, is being withdrawn", sources said, adding "following this, the Aadhaar project of UID Authority of India will be replaced with National Population Register as per the Government of India decision to implement National Population Register by Registrar General and Census Commissioner, Ministry of Home Affairs in the State".

According to the sources, Cabinet will also consider the proposals regarding the transfer of land for different projects including setting up of Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Ramnagar constituency.

Highland Journeys launches cruise service in Jehlum

 A private tour company, Highland Journeys today launched this year’s cruise service by operating the first cruise ride between the Peerzoo Island and Chattabal Weir this afternoon.

The people who were part of the Cruise service were exalted to learn about the rich heritage of the Srinagar by taking the ride that culminated in almost two hours. During the journey some of the important bridges located on the river Jehlum like Amira Kadal, Budshah Bridge, Habba Kadal, New Fateh Kadal, Old Fateh Kadal, New Zaina Kadal, Old Zaina Kadal, Aali Kadal, Nawa Kadal and Safa Kadal were seen by the people.

Sharing his views, Rauf Tramboo, Owner Highland Journeys said that the service has been started to provide a glimpse to both the locals and tourists about the rich heritage that the summer capital of the state possesses. He said people should come and enjoy the service so that the message is passed on to the others.

"We wish and hope that tourists would come over here and enjoy the cruise service. This is more than important since Srinagar is linked with the rich heritage and tradition of the state. Some of the architectural marvels are located along the banks of river Jhelum and these can be seen only when a person undertakes a cruise ride," said Rauf.

He said that last year 60 groups of visitors availed the services of the cruise and enjoyed the magnificence of Srinagar. He said that advisories issued by the various European countries have taken a toll of the tourism in jammu kashmir the state.

"The advisories need to be removed so that foreign tourists come over here. The foreigners are the real lovers of heritage and architecture and they can see during the Cruise ride. Hopefully this time more groups of both the domestic and foreign tourists come to Kashmir and enjoy this ride," said Rauf.

Mohammad Saleem Beigh, Jammu and Kashmir convener for INTACH said that river Jhelum depicts the life of the Srinagar city more so as many shrines and temples are located on its banks. He said that there are 44 banks on the river Jhelum from Zero Bridge to Maharaj Gunj area located near the Zaina Kadal bridge.

The cruise can be enjoyed at the rate of Rs. 350 per ride for an adult while as it is Rs. 250 per child. The ride is completed within two hours and it passes through some of the important areas of the old Srinagar city.

Even as the Jammu Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation is losing revenue worth crores every year, nearly 67 of its huts located at prime locations of Cheshmashahi and Pari Mahal, near Dal lake in Srinagar (Kashmir) are occupied by VIPs including bureaucrats and a few legislators.

Raising this issue in the Upper House today, PDP members Mohd Ashraf Mir and Murtaza Khan pointed out that JKTDC whose financial condition was already not good has been let to suffer huge loss as its beautiful huts, located at prime locations of Srinagar city have been occupied by bureaucrats. Lakhs of tourists who visit Kashmir every year have been denied this facility despite the fact that these huts were raised for them.

Mr Khan asked if militancy was the reason to accommodate these people in such huts, what steps were taken by the Government in last three years to arrange alternative accommodation for them and before militancy, where were they accommodated. Whether Government intended to get these huts vacated and when, he asked.

Giving reply, Minister in charge Tourism Nawang Rigzin Jora said the JKTDC has 45 huts available at Cheshmashahi and 22 at Pari Mahal in Srinagar. During summer (May-Oct 2011), 46 huts were with Estates, 19 Home Department, one with J&K Bank while only one was kept for the online booking/ reservation of tourists. During winters, out of the total, 40 huts are kept for tourists reservation. In response to a question the Minister said that JKTDC is getting revenue from the concerned departments and it generated revenue of ` 2.95 crore during 2010-11 and till January 2012 this year nearly ` 2.34 crore. He said due to militancy and security threat, these officials were accommodated there and now Government was planning to raise alternative accommodation for them.

Mr Jora provided the list of occupants of huts at Cheshmashahi and Pari-Mahal. Walkouts over refugees and tourism issue

The Lower House of State Legislature today witnessed walk-outs by the members of Jammu-based Opposition over the issues of West Pakistan refugees and neglect of several areas in the tourism sector.

Raising the issue of West Pakistan refugees as soon as the proceedings of the House began, MLA from Jammu West Assembly segment, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, said that refugees were forced to march towards Delhi to raise their voice as the State Government has failed to meet their aspirations.

Demanding citizenship rights to the West Pakistan refugees, he said, "it is unfortunate that State Government has failed to provide them justice, which they have been clamoring for during the past several decades".

He was joined by all the MLAs of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), National Panthers Party (NPP) and Jammu State Morcha, who left their seats and moved towards the front row. "It is pity that Government is mum over the issue of citizenship rights of refugees", they regretted and asked the Government to make its stand clear on the issue.

As there was no response from the Government, the agitated MLAs started raising slogans against the Government. Slogans like "Refugeeyon Ka Masla Hal Karo", "West Pakistan Refugueeyon Ka Masla Hal Karo" and Refugee Virodhi Sarkar Hai Hai" rented the House.

After protesting against the Government for sometime, all the members of Jammu-based Opposition staged walk-out of the House accusing the Government of not showing any interest towards the genuine demands of the West Pakistan refugees.

Another walk-out was witnessed on the issue of tourism during the Question Hour. "Bani-Basohli areas have rich potential of tourism but the Government has neglected these areas", MLAs from these areas—Jagdish Raj Sapolia and Lal Chand said.

"Due to the neglect, the tourism activities have virtually come to an end in these areas", they said. As they were not allowed to further raise their issue, some more BJP rebel MLAs came to the support of Sapolia and Lal Chand and after protesting for sometime near the front row, all the BJP rebel MLAs staged walk-out.

On this Speaker remarked in a lighter vein, "take Ashok Khajuria along with you".

Earlier, in response to the question of MLA from Basohli, Jagdish Raj Sapolia, Minister for Tourism and Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora, said, "no work was taken up for promotion of tourism at Dhar-Mahanpur during the last two years".

Sonamarg Still Inaccessible

 With the improvement in the weather conditions, the picturesque Sonamarg here in district Ganderbal is still inaccessible with authorities doing nothing to clear the snow on the Srinagar-Sonamarg National Highway. Due to the non-clearance of snow, the tourists and hoteliers are miffed at the concerned authorities.

The tourist, residents of Sonamarg area, hoteliers and the businessmen have demanded immediate restoration of Srinagar-Sonamarg road. They said change in weather has increased the number of tourist visiting different tourist resorts in Kashmir, but world famous Sonamarg wears a deserted look and it is still cut-off from rest of the world.

The authorities are trying their level best to clear the snow from the Srinagar Sonamarg highway, which was closed in November last due to heavy snowfall.
According to the businessmen and tourists, the closure of Sonmarg road has made both the tourists and traders disappointed as the tourists are not allowed to go beyond Gagangeer from where Sonamarg is just eight kilometers away.
One of the tourists from Gandhi Nagar, Rajesh Sharma said that he and his family are in Kashmir for the last one week and have visited almost every tourist place except Sonamarg. They said their vehicle was not allowed to go beyond Gagangeer due to snow on the road.

“We are really very disappointed as we could not visit ‘golden meadow’ Sonamarg," said Rajesh.

One of the hotel owners Bashir Ahmad Mir told Jk News over phone that they have build a hotel at Sonamarg after taking the loan from the bank and now they have to pay interest without any earning as the road is still under snow which does not allow visitors to reach Sonamarg.

“I am suffering huge losses and if the road is not cleared within few days, I may approach to the judiciary for compensation and justice," he said.
A shop owner Shabir Ahmad Lone termed it "very unfortunate" on part of government for keeping this world famous tourist spot closed for six months.
“Need of the hour is to take immediate steps for making Sonamarg accessible to the whole world throughout the year," he said.

Meanwhile, a senior official of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in an interaction with media persons said that they intend to start snow clearance process from two sides in second week of March to make vehicular movement possible up to Sonamarg.

“We have deputed two bulldozers in Sonamarg in November last year for which fuel and drivers will be airlifted to reach there to start snow clearance process from Gagangeer as well as Sonamarg at a time and we are trying our level best to restore Srinagar-Sonamarg road functional as early as possible," he said.

He further added that BRO has decided to construct 6.5 kms long tunnel between Gagangeer and Sonamarg to make Sonamarg motorable for round the year, and the foundation stone of the proposed tunnel will be laid in September this year.

International Seminar on Tourism Inaugurated

The Business School, University of Jammu (JU) in collaboration with Department of Tourism organized 2-day international seminar on "Sustainable Practices in Trans-Himalayan Destinations ", here today.Minister for Tourism and Culture Nawang Rigzin Jora inaugurated the function while Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, Prof. Mohan Paul Singh Ishar presided over the function.

Addressing the function, Jora, appreciated the efforts initiated by The Business School and Tourism Department and said that Government has taken several steps for the exploration of the new destinations and conserving the cultural heritage for growth of tourism sector in the State. He emphasized that in order to promote sustainable tourism few key factors such as benefit to local people, respect for environment and ecology, and conservation of the distinct culture of the place should be given due consideration.

Prof. Mohan Paul Singh Ishar in his presidential address hoped that International Seminar would go a long way in promoting the tourism sector in the State. He talked about the devastation of the environment and its harmful impact on the sustainability of tourism. While stressing upon preserving the ecology of the Trans- Himalyan tracks he quoted many examples and encouraged the students to explore the beauty of Himalayas.
Prof. Lorant David, of Karoly Robert College Gyngyos Hungry, in his keynote address, highlighted the importance of ecotourism through his presentation on ‘Tourism Ecology: A Key for the Future’. He discussed the relation of natural environment, alternative forms of tourism and sustainable tourism.

Earlier, Prof Ashok Aima in his welcome address focused on the objective of the international seminar being organized under the aegis of UGC SAP (DRS-1). Prof. Aima dwelt on the need for an integrated approach for promotion of tourism in Trans- Himalyan region of the country and neighboring regions as well besides, making the consorted effort for rediscovering silk route. Prof. Aima elucidated upon various issues related to contemporary practices and innovations in tourism industry so as to evolve and formulate strategic policy for the promotion of sustainable tourism.

Prof Neelu Rohmetra, Director, The Business School and ICccR and HRM, University of Jammu, spoke on the Major achievements and initiatives of the Department and stated that the present conference is one such initiative taken by The Business School under UGC- SAP (DRS-1). She also announced the launch of ‘Management Connect’ – A new management journal in a short span of time.

On the occasion two books were released edited by Prof Ashok Aima, Dr. Parikshat Singh Manhas and Dr Jaya Bhasin, based on previous UGC (SAP) seminar papers as well as present seminar papers.

Dr Parikshat Singh Manhas, Organising Secretary talked about the constant unstated support provided by the State Government especially Ministry of Tourism, J&K in promotion of Tourism and tourism related activities and imparting tourism education. He also appreciated the efforts of University of Jammu in launching new tourism related courses and thanked the faculty, students and research scholars for their contribution.

Later, during the day, technical tracks were conducted which were chaired by S.M.Sahni, Prof Neelu Rohmetra, Prof. Deepak Raj Gupta, Prof Versha Mehta, Prof. B.C. Sharma , Dr. Parikshat Singh Manhas and Co-chaired by Dr Prashant Gupta,Dr. Rajinder Mishra, Dr. Sameer Gupta, Dr Vinay Chauhan, Dr.Amisha Gupta,and Dr. Rachna. Saloni, Ramjit, Zubair Ahmed, Kitty Raina, Jeet Dogra, Swati gupta and were the coordinators for the technical tracks.

Govt to tap pilgrim tourism potential

Lauding efforts of Shree Chandi Mata Trust for providing platform to singers, Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand said the State is rich in talent and local artists have excelled in their field not only in the country but all over the world. Such competitions go a long way in nurturing budding vocalists of the area and provides an opportunity to showcase the local talent to a wider audience, he added.

He was speaking after inaugurating Bhaint competition organized by Shree Chandi Mata Trust, Jammu and kashmir.

Calling upon the organizers to make the event a regular feature, the Deputy Chief Minister said every year a national level Bhajan competition is organized at Katra and local as well as national artists participate in the same, adding that success of the competition can be adjudged from the fact that winners of the competition have earned name and fame in the music industry.

Reiterating resolve of the Government for promoting pilgrim tourism, Mr. Tara Chand said focused attention is being paid to promote religious tourist circuits of the State and all out efforts have been initiated to upgrade required infrastructure at these world famous pilgrim destinations.

He said tourism is an important contributor to State's economy and Government is fully determined to tap the vast potential of pilgrim tourism in all three regions of the State.

Underscoring the need to provide better facilities to pilgrims, he said Ghulam Nabi Azad has shown personal interest in the project for upgrading infrastructure of Machail Yatra and measures have been initiated to improve the arrangements on the lines of Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra.

"Machail Yatra is growing every year and as per an estimate it has crossed five lakh last year, now we have to initiate measures for promoting the yatra in a much bigger way," he added.

Among others the function was attended by, Padam Shree S.P. Verma and Special Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Kuldip Lal Khajuria.

Various demands were projected by the Trust, including Bhawan/ Sarai at Jammu and Padar and up gradation of facilities for the visiting yatris.

Responding to the demands, the Deputy Chief Minister said all genuine demands of the Trust would be examined and necessary action taken.

Losar Festival Welcomes New Year

Fighting the biting cold, over thousand Ladakhi students today thronged the celebrations of Losar-a traditional festival, the Ladakhi way of welcoming the New Year with dominating Tibetan and Buddhist overtones.

An impressive colourful programme in this connection was organized by All Ladakh Students Association Jammu (ALSAJ) at Bhagwati Nagar. Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister for Tourism and Culture was the chief guest on the occasion while Rigzin Spalbar, CEC, LAHCD was guest of the honour.

On the occasion, the students presented a colourful traditional programme depicting the rich cultural ethos of the region. The presentations mesmerized the audience winning great applause from one and all.

Nawang Rigzin Jora greeted people, especially the Buddhist community on the eve of Losar. He highlighted the rich traditions of amity and brotherhood prevailing in Ladakh region. 

Jora advised the students to take full benefit of congenial academic atmosphere and achieve excellence in their streams of interest. He said "Youth are the future builders of a nation and they have to prepare themselves fully to face the future challenges". 

Rabgias, President ALSAJ in his address thanked all the dignitaries, participants and spectators present on the occasion. Rabgias also presented a charter of demands to the Minister which included opening of University, JKPSC Nodal Cell and JKSSRB at Leh.

Earlier, the function commenced with the lighting of the traditional lamp by the Minister and other dignitaries. 
Narbo Gulsan, MLC Leh; Robin Singh Mehta, Director Tourism, Jammu; Director General Fisheries besides a large number of Ladakhi students, social, political activists of the region and prominent citizens were present on the occasion.

J&K festival at New Delhi

Union Minister Farooq Abdullah  today took a dig at his son and Jammu and Kashmir Chief  Minister, Omar Abdullah, for speaking in English at a  function here saying that although he (Dr Abdullah) was   married to an English lady, he was not married to English  language.

Both father and son duo were speaking at the opening of a three-day cultural festival of Jammu and Kashmir here.
Omar Abdullah, who inaugurated the festival, spoke in English inviting people to visit his state. Dr Abdullah, who spoke after his son, addressed the gathering in Hindi.

"It was very nice to hear my son (Chief Minister Omar). But I must say that although I am married to an English lady, I am not married to English language," he said amid laughter. Farooq  Abdullah, a former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, while praising Kashmiri language, said no language could match its finesse.

While inviting people to visit the state, Dr Abdullah said the situation had now changed and things were looking up.
The Governor N. N. Vohra and the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah jointly inaugurated the 3-day festival of Jammu and Kashmir at India International Centre, here this evening to show case State's rich cultural diversity.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor emphasized the need for preservation and effective showcasing of the rich cultural heritage of the Jammu and Kashmir for which it has been known since centauries. "We should focus on reviving and strengthening our glorious pluralistic cultural traditions and heritage and work towards making India a strong and a vibrant nation", he added.

Mr. Vohra said "our's is a multi-religious, multi-lingual and multi-cultural country and this unique aspect has been the greatest strength of our country".

Addressing the jam packed audience at IIC the Chief Minister said that this event has provided a very useful opportunity to the artists from various parts of the State for coming together and showcasing cultural heritage of various areas, adding that it would go a long way in further strengthening our cultural unity.

He said that the showcasing of this festival would on one hand showcase the State's rich cultural diversity and on the other promote tourism in the State. "Unfortunately the State is being viewed through the prism of security environment and its positivity in many form including culture, heritage, amity and secular fabric are not receiving the mush sought focus", he said, adding that the need of hour is to view the State from positive angles.

Omar said that violence in the state has reduced to a greater degree at present as compared to the last two decades. He said successful conduct of Panchayati elections and in-flow of a record number of tourist in the State shows that peace is rooting fast and the State is emerging on the tourism map once again.

The Chief Minister said that Jammu and Kashmir State has a unique blend of multifaceted cultures making it a fine example of unity in diversity. He said that festival would provide an opportunity to the people to see and feel the multi-lingual, multi-cultural and multi- ethnic facets of the state with three divergent socio-cultural and geographical regions namely Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.

Union Minster for New and Renewable Energy Dr Farooq Abdullah also addressed the audience and invited the people from other parts of the State to visit Jammu and Kashmir and relish its scenic beauty, rich cultural heritage and communal harmony. He also complemented the State Government for successful conduct of Panchayat election in the State.

The festival is marked with the art and photo exhibition, screening of films by Information Department, seminars on cultural heritage and environment of the State, mushaira, folk dances, theatre performances traditional songs and dances, demonstration by artisans, Sufiana Kalams and Ladakhi mask dances.

As part of the festival, the Governor and the Chief Minister also inaugurated the Art Exhibition at the Art Gallery of the IIC. The art exhibition has been organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of the Art Culture and Languages.

President IIC, M.G.K. Menon presented welcome address on the occasion.

Minister for Tourism and Culture Nawang Ragzin Jora was conferred "Readers Travel Award" for his outstanding contribution in promotion of tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.

The award was given by Union Minister for Tourism Subodh Kant Sahai in the presence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at an impressive function, organized by Conda Nest Travellers, publishing a leading elite magazine at Leela Palace, Chankiyapuri. The organization in its survey declared Mr. Jora an efficient, dedicated and honest, who worked hard in promotion and showcasing the tourism potential of the State in and outside the country.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Jora said that State Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has taken exemplary initiatives to fully explore varied tourism potential of the State, with focused attention to develop destinations and creation of modern infrastructure. Development of golf courses, convention centres and water sports have received due attention, he maintained.

The Minister said that Government succeeded in bringing complete peace and normalcy in the State due to which this season State witnessed a huge influx of domestic and foreign tourists. He hoped that in future J&K would become a hub of tourist activities.

Mr. Jora said that tourist related infrastructure is being created and upgraded with sincere financial assistance of Centre. He thanked Union Ministry of Tourism for providing every possible support in showcasing the rich tourism potential of the State.

Mr. Jora hoped that J&K would enormously benefit with the visit of elite class tourists from the country and abroad in coming years, for which he said Government has launched a wide publicity campaign to aware the visitors of other countries about the peaceful atmosphere and rich varied tourism potential of the State.

Chandil Wanigam Baderkoot new Tourist Resorts

Minister for Agriculture,Ghulam Hassan Mir said that a number of steps are being taken for developing the tourism sector on the modern lines so that the problem of unemployment in the State could be solved. The Minister was addressing a public gathering at Chandil Wanigam in Tangmarg area. He said that educated youth can play a vital role to change the future of the nation. He said that peace is very vital for overall development of the J&K State. He said due to two decades turmoil, the state could not progress as much as compared to other states of the country.He said the coalition government has decided to recruit the educated youth of the far flung areas of the state under RT scheme for dealing the burning of unemployment problem in a phased manner. He appealed, the teaching fraternity for work with dedication and honesty for the betterment of education sector, so that our children can be able to compete with others on national and international level exams.

Referring the development of Tangmarg area, the Minister said a Mini Secretariat would be constructed here, where all offices of Tangmarg Tehsil would be accommodated. The complex would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 34 crore. He said Rs. 15 crore have already have been spent on the execution of various welfare and development scheme in Tangmarg constituency.He said that Tangmarg is being connected with Poonch and the work on this project will be started soon and hoped that the project will be completed within 5 years. Referring the local demands, the Minister assured the people that their problems would be solved on priority basis.
