JKBOSE Results of Class 10th Board Exams 2015

The girls have outshined boys by bagging 233 top slots while boys got 127 slots out of 360 top 20 positions in merit list of class 10 results of Jammu division declared here on Monday.

Jammu and Kashmir Board of Education (JKBOSE) had declared the results of Class 10 board exams 2015 of Jammu division with 62.27 pass percentage. However, the overall pass percentage of girls (64 per cent) is higher than that of boys (60.84 percent), the officials said.

A total of 51,442 students-28,213 boys and 23,229 girls-had appeared in the examination which was held in March this year, out of which 19285 students were not qualified.The top three positions have been bagged by three girls and two boys.

Pratikha, a student of BVM High School Ramnagar of Udhampur district has secured the first position with 492 marks (98.40 per cent) out of maximum 500.

The second position has been shared by Kiranpreet Kour, Caramel Convent High School, Kunjwani, Nitin Pandita, SL Memorial Model High School Santra Morh, Anand Nagar and Avantika Jamwal, Little Flower Convent High School, Udhampur with 491 marks (98.20 per cent), while the third position was bagged by Deepanshu Sharma, St Mary Convent School Smailpur, who obtained 490 marks (98.0 per cent).

The fourth position was shared by Partima Gupta, JK Public School, Panjtirthi, Sarleen Kour, Caramel Convent High School, Kunjwani, Sanya Gupta, St Peter’s High School, BC Road, Abhishek Sharma, Spring Dales English School, Kathua and Mridul Reothia, Sacred Heart Convent High School, Phinter with 489 marks (97.80 per cent).

It was proud privileged of JK Public School Panjtirthi from which five students made it to merit list. Five students of JK Public School Panjtirthi including Pritma Gupta, daughter of Ajay Gupta and Alka Gupta got fourth position with 489 marks (97.80 per cent), Krishika Gupta, daughter of Naresh Kumar Gupta and Anju Gupta got tenth positions with 483 marks (96.60 per cent), Riya Goswami, daughter of Tara Chand Goswami and Anju Bala secured eleventh position with 482 marks (96.40 per cent), Muskan Wahi, daughter of Kushay Wahi and Rama Wahi bagged thirteenth position with 480 marks (96.00 per cent) and Rhythum, son of Sanjive Kumar and Urmila got seventeenth position with 476 marks (95.20 per cent).

Talking to news reporters, position holders of JK Public School Panjtirthi, while sharing their success said, “We have not taken coaching from any private tuition centre and it was our own efforts that helped us to understand the concepts better. Apart from hard work, it was the motivation by teaching faculty of the school and support of family that led to our success in board exams. The excellent teaching faculty of the school and our supporting families kindled the required zest and determination into our minds and rest is the history. Regular studies and revision of topics taught everyday in school always helped in strengthening the basic concepts and we thus strongly feel that if you want to succeed in exams then start from the very first day.” They owe their success in board exams to their teachers, school and family.

Pritma Gupta, a proud top position holder in JK Public School Panjtirthi said, “Somewhere in my mind I was aware that I would definitely score good marks and this was possible only because of my school, my parents and my respected teachers. They all really supported me well. My school provided study material, facilities, good and peaceful environment to study. To evaluate the students time to time, they also conducted many assessments for us. And I really want to thank my Principal Suman Banbah and my respected teachers for their timely guidance and support. Scoring 97 per cent in board exams is a dream come true which is possible because of my school and my hard work. I strongly believe that hard work is the key to success and I would advise the same to all the students.”
Krishika Gupta, who got tenth position said, “My parents and teachers helped me in my studies and I thanked them for my achievement,” adding that I want to pursue engineering and want to become an IAS officer.

Nirmal Singh reviews Kheer Bhawani Mela arrangements

Deputy Chief Minister, Dr. Nirmal Singh today directed the administration to ensure that appropriate arrangements are put in place for the smooth conduct of upcoming Kheer Bhawani Mela, so that the devotees do not face any inconvenience.

The Deputy Chief Minister was interacting with the officers during his visit to Kheer Bhawani Shrine in district Ganderbal to oversee the arrangements for the annual Kheer Bhawani Mela being celebrated on 26th May. Thousands of devotees from within and outside the State are expected to join the festival.

MLC Ajatshatru Singh, DDC Ganderbal, Showkat Aijaz, SSP Ganderbal Imtiyaz Ismail, SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir, Javaid Koul, SSP Security Kashmir, Maqsood-ul-Zaman, ACR Ganderbal, Chairman Dharmarath Trust and district officers were present on the occasion.

The Deputy CM said such festive occasions exhibit brotherhood and communal harmony among the people of Kashmir and provide an opportunity to bridge the gap among different geographic regions of J&K. He said the state is known for its pluralistic character and mutual brotherhood among different sections of the society.

Dr. Singh discussed department-wise facilities to be provided for the devotees and particularly reviewed the position with regard to power, water supply, sanitation, traffic management, security arrangements, availability of essentials and medical facilities.

The Deputy Chief Minister was given brief about the preparedness of the district administration for the upcoming Mela and was told that a foolproof mechanism was put in place to ensure that the devotees get the requisite necessary facilities for performing religious rituals.

Ancient Shiva Cave Discovered in Reasi

An ancient Lord Shiva cave has been discovered on the high mountain near Thanpal in Salal area of district Reasi.

The area is tough terrain and nearly 2 hour on foot journey along Surman ‘Khud’. The villagers with their efforts managed to make narrow track up to the cave which is on the steep rocky mountain. On one side there is Salal dam and on the other at high mountain this cave.

The locals said that this cave was inaccessible due to its location but as they used to hear some kind of sounds from that area, nobody ever dared to go that side. A daring youth of the area namely Sunil Kumar, son of Paras Ram, armed with gun and assisted by 2-3 more youth, managed to reach up to the cave using ropes and his mountaineering skills. He saw a Shiva Lingam, stone idols of Shiva family, a statue of Saint and Hanuman. The cave appears to be almost equal to that of Shiv Khori. After this, the youth returned and told this matter to the whole village.

The next day, the village Sarpanch and some locals started digging track on the rocky mountain and with in few days they managed to reach there and saw the cave. They saw ‘Pindis’ and a big Shiva Lingam. The villagers narrated the matter to the local MLA and district administration. On their request, some officers including DC also visited the cave last week and they were astonished to see such a wonderful cave. They assured to develop the area and the cave for pilgrimage on the pattern of Shiv Khori.

There are two different routes one via Talwara-Siar Baba and Thanpal using boat over Salal dam and another one via Reasi Salal and yet another one via Bidda Dhayangarh Dam site.

Navratra Festival 2012 at Bawe Wali Mata Temple

Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation, Raman Bhalla today asked the JDA, PDD, JMC, R&B, Health, Police and Traffic Departments to make all necessary arrangements at Shri Bawe Wali Mata temple for the smooth conduct of nine-day Navratras Festival.

The Minister said this while inspecting the arrangements made by the various departments at the temple, here this evening.

Officers of JMC, R&B, PHE, PDD, Health, Police and Traffic Departments accompanied the Minister.

Mr. Bhalla asked the JMC to complete the remaining works of temporary toilet blocks, including construction of water reservoir positively in double shifts for the convenience of devotees. He asked the PDD and JMC to make functional all the street lights in and around temple, including way side.

The Minister called upon the shopkeepers not to sell stale eatables to the visitors and beautify the area by displaying goods in an attractive manner with attractive sunshades for protection.

Mr. Bhalla said, "to meet the challenges in tourism, our emphasis is on diversification and providing requisite infrastructure facilities to the pilgrims and tourists in the State". He said that efforts are on to divert tourists of Mata Vaishno Devi to other pilgrim places and leisure and adventure spots of both the region and added that for the purpose Government was making all out efforts to upgrade the infrastructure and recreational facilities at tourist and holy places across the State.

The Minister said Tourist Reception Centres, wayside facilities and huts have been developed along the way to almost all the tourist destinations.

Giving the details of some initiatives taken by the Government for development and upgrading of tourism infrastructure in Jammu Division, the Minister said that the restoration and conservation work of Mubarak Mandi Heritage Complex would be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore, adding that out of which Rs.75 crore have been approved by the Centre for the current financial year.

He said that Government has sanctioned Rs. 3.5 crore for developing the river Tawi embankment area near Peer Kho Temple by constructing park, Tourist Reception Centre, artificial lake and viewpoints, adding that Rs. 90 lakh have been kept for construction of view points and road widening from Bahu Fort to Harki Poudi temple.

Lekhak staged by Nav Durga Kala Manch

Balwant Gargi’s famous play ‘Lekhak’ was staged today by Nav Durga Kala Manch at its Performing Art Studio, Jammu, in its ongoing Friday Theatre Series.

The play, which is directed by Aaditya Bhanu, is based on a writer, who is busy in writing a creative script for Radio. He undergoes various kinds of creative tensions but finally when he was going to end the script, he gets distracted by his neighbour, his friend and his relative.

The play beautifully portrayed the struggle of a creative writer, his effort, his energy, which he puts in creating a script. Without realizing his mental tension as when he is busy in writing script, everyone visits his home and starts telling their own problems. The play also depicts the life of a common man, who is busy in himself doing something for him, but fails to do so as he gets unfocussed by his colleagues and his work is affected and he gets depressed.

Dilshad Shazi as writer once again proved his mettle by doing such type of serious characters except comedy for which he is famous.

Tarun Sudershan Vasson as his relative was very much in character of a villager and portrayed his worth of acting too.

Reetu Manhas as his neighbour, Kamaljit Singh as his friend and Kibu Bharat as his servant too beautifully enacted their respective roles.

Make up was done by Reetu Manhas while lights were executed by Sudesh Thakur. The music was handled by Parveen Kumar and the presentation was done by Aaditya Bhanu.

Jesht Ashtami 2012 in Jammu Kheer Bhawani temple

New telephone directory of senior citizens released


Association for Welfare of Senior Citizens (AWSC) released, first of its kind, telephone directory of the members of AWSC here today.

The directory contains all important helpline telephone numbers most needed by any senior citizenin case of any emergency. It also contains the telephone number of office bearers of North Zone Federation of Senior Citizens of all North Zone states to which AWSC is affiliated.

The new directory was released by H B Khajuria, patron, V N Sharma, senior vice president, Vikran Gour, president, S K Gupta vice president, K K Mahajan general secretary, R C Gupta and B M Kohli in presence of large number of AWSC members.

The members welcomed the publication of the directory and pointed out that this will bring the members closer to each other. All 207 members of the association are listed in the directory with their names and address, profession, present assignment, if any and their date of birth. This would help members to keep themselves in touch with each other to help them at the time of any emergency.

With availability of date of birth of members in directory, they will be able to wish each other on their birth days which are normally forgotten. The association also proposes to issue a monthly news-letter shortly.

Green Belt Park dedicated to public

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad today said that the Super Speciality Hospital Jammu would be dedicated to the people in next couple of months offering much required specialized services to the people of the region.

Speaking at the inauguration of one-kilometre long Indira Gandhi Green Belt Park at Housing Colony, Channi Himmat, here today, Union Minister reiterated Central Government's commitment to make the specialized health services available to the people of every part of the country.

Listing various health projects taken up in the State, he said that Centre has sanctioned Rs 100 crore for establishment of two maternity hospitals, one each in Jammu and Srinagar. He said that the projects are under progress and likely to be completed within one year.

Earlier dedicating the newly developed park to the people, Mr Azad advised the people to utilize their spare time for exercise and walks utilizing the recreational parks developed by the Government across cities and towns for their well being.

Mr. Azad said sedentary life style was the major cause for ill health and daily exercise in the open spaces is the only solution to keep maladies like fat, diabetics, hyper tension and heart ailment at bay. He asked the Housing and Urban Department Ministry to develop open spaces available in the localities, canal embankments or nallahs as pathways so that the morning and evening walkers could enjoy their spare time there.

In his address, Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand said that Government has geared up officers for retrieving State land from the land grabbers. He said Government has prepared a comprehensive plan to utilize retrieved land at various places for the construction of social infrastructure and Government assets.

He said that with the inauguration of Indira Gandhi Green Belt Park, the long pending demand of Channi Himmat people has been fulfilled. He said first phase of 1-km long recreational park has been developed with illumination, seating, irrigation, drinking water and pathway facilities and remaining part is under progress and would be soon be dedicated to Jammuities.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Bhalla said that for facilitating the pilgrims and tourists at Bahu Fort area, the Government has created modern line wayside facilities like recreational garden, aquarium, balidan stumb, landscaping, view points, tug shop, toilet blocks, fencing, illumination, drinking water besides construction of darshani deodi near Kalika colony.

Meanwhile, Mr Azad visited Sainik Colony Ward No. 70. The interaction session with the residents of Sainik Colony organised by Namrta Sharma, Congress leader and ex-corporator of the area.

Launch metro service in Jammu Harshdev


 Stating that Jammu qualifies the norms fixed by the Government of India, National Panthers Party (NPP) MLA Harshdev Singh today demanded the launch of metro service in the winter capital of the State.

Raising the issue of traffic congestion in Jammu during Zero Hour in the Assembly, Harshdev Singh said that the GoI had announced during January this year to provide metro services in those cities which have a population of more than 15 lakh.

"Jammu district has population of 1526406 as per 2011 census as such it qualifies the norms fixed for metro service", he said, adding "State Government should immediately take up the issue with Union Government so that early steps are taken for initiation of the project".

He said that vehicular traffic in the city has become unmanageable and causing insurmountable problems for the general public, adding every year 40,000 new vehicles are being added to the existing fleet in Jammu district.

The NPP MLA said that Government's repeated announcements and claims of early flyovers in Jammu have proved to be a farce, adding "if the traffic issue is not taken seriously it could assume alarming proportions and create gigantic hardships and severe problems for the general masses".

Dr Mohammad Shafi raised the issue of substantial hike in fee structure in private schools and sought check on it while as Prof Gharu Ram demanded that a local VC should be appointed in SKUAST-J.

Mushtaq Ahmed Shah called for proper utilization of funds meant for migrant and re-verifications of migrant lists while as Abdul Haq Khan demanded lifting of ban on news channels in the Valley. Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo demanded filling up of the vacant posts of teachers in Doda district.

R S Sharma and Krishan Chander Bhagat sought strengthening of transport facilities in their constituencies while as Peer Mansoor Hussain demanded enhancement of timber quota in Government depots.

Prof Chaman Lal Gupta sought check on the illegal constructions in Jammu City, particularly in Jammu-west constituency and covering of deep drains. Chowdhary Zulfikar Hussain raised the issue of shortage of Urdu teachers in Jammu division.

Indu Pawar sought immediate flood protection measures in the locations near the Tawi in Marh area while as Ashwani Sharma demanded waiving off Water Tax from the farmers of such areas where irrigation canal water does not reach.

Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, Mohammad Rafi and Yashpaul Kundal also raised the issues of public importance.

78620 Houses to Have Modern Sewerage System

Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand today said that no non-resident builders are allowed to operate in the State for constructing buildings and complexes.

Replying to a question of Ajatshatru Singh in the Legislative Council today, he said building permissions are accorded as per the provisions contained in BOCA, building bye laws in addition to the provisions specified in master plan and relevant revenue records. He said wherever any violation is reported to have been taken, the appropriate action is being initiated.

Replying to an another question of Vijay Bakaya, the Deputy Chief Minister informed the House that under JNNURM two cities of Jammu and Srinagar are to be provided modern sewerage system. He said under the project, 48220 houses of Srinagar city at a cost of ` 132.01 crore and 30400 houses of Jammu at a cost of ` 129.30 crores have been identified to connect them with modern sewerage system.

He said ` 54.50 crore and ` 52.99 crore have been released so far from the Centre for Srinagar and Jammu respectively under the project. He said the execution plans of the project in both the cities are being under taken in the phases and sequential manner.

The Deputy Chief Minister further informed the House that the works on STP, Trunk Sewer, Lateral Sewer lines and Raider mains of both sewerage projects are in progress.

Replying to a question of Ravinder Kumar Sharma, the Deputy Chief Minister informed the House that Government has imposed a ban on polythene carry bags in the state under J&K Non Bio Degradable Material Act-2007. He said, however, hospitals, health care facilities are exempted from the ban to the extent of use of polythene carry bags for collection of Bio Medical waste in accordance with Bio Medical Rules 1998. He said impact of ban is increasing gradually and use of polythene is on decline.

For implementation of ban on polythene in Urban Local Bodies, the DyCM said the total quantity of polythene seized by Pollution Control Board in Municipal Corporations of Jammu and Srinagar was 1608 quintals and urban local bodies Jammu and Srinagar is 133 quintals.

Supplementaries were raised by Sheikh Ghulam Rasool, Vijay Bakaya, Murtaza Ahmed Khan, Syed Mohammad Rafiq Shah, Ajatshatru Singh and Ajay Kumar Sadhotra.

In reply to another question by Mr. Mohammad Amin Bhat, Mr. Tara Chand said that there is a need for construction of a truck terminal at Qazigund.

He said for the said purpose the availability of state land ideally located along the Srinagar-Jammu national highway at Qazigund is being explored. He said as and when the land is identified and acquired, DPR will be prepared for construction of the said terminal subject to the availability of the funds.

PDP to create atmosphere for return of KPs to Valley

Reiterating resolve of his party to restore sustainable peace in Jammu and Kashmir, patron of People's Democratic Party (PDP) Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said that PDP would create conducive atmosphere for the return of migrant Kashmir Pandits to their native places in Kashmir Valley.

"Policies and programmes of PDP are formulated by accommodating wishes and aspirations of all sections of the society", he said and asserted that party would work assiduously to implement its policy of peace and reconciliation in the State.

Interacting with prominent citizens at Gole Gujaral area of Jammu city, PDP patron said that it was his desire to make Jammu and Kashmir as an island of peace. "I was comfortable in the Congress but we formed PDP with an aim of restoring lasting peace in this region", he said and sought support of every section of the society to fulfill this dream.

He said that some vested interests have launched vicious campaign against PDP to create misunderstanding. "My political life is an open book. My political life is also crystal clear", he said.

Mr Sayeed, while highlighting achievements of PDP led regime, said that in short span of time PDP had tried to address aspirations of all sections of the society. "Self praise is no recommendations but steps taken during our regime to provide justice to every citizens of the State are indicator of our sincere efforts to mitigate misery of people", he said and added that the previous PDP-regime had set an example of good governance and the people have realized that only this party has the vision and conviction to solve their problems.

"It was the result of the efforts of our party that people's faith was revived in democratic institutions. There was participation of common masses in governance," the PDP leader said. He reminded that PDP led regime had set an example of good governance in the State.

Reiterating that dialogue was the only way to solve all problems, he said the peace process initiated by his Government was an irreversible process and the roadmap laid by his party was the only way to establish sustainable peace in the sub-continent.

He said that present regime has failed to keep its promises and the people were looking at the PDP as an alternative to have their aspirations addressed. "Handling Jammu and Kashmir is not a childish issue. It is a very complicate place to handle", he observed and added that during the last three years the present regime has reversed the process of peace and development in the State.

Pointing towards issues raised by the residents of Gole Gujaral and adjoining localities, he said that solving problems of the refugees of Muzaffarabad and other areas was on the top of party's agenda. He said that his party would vociferously take up issues of refugees on all platforms.

Sanskrit Vidyarthi Parishad strike continues

The strike of J&K Sanskrit Vidyarthi Parishad continued today in support of their demands.

President of the Parishad, Neeraj Sharma, while addressing a gathering of students and scholars said the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi, has ignored the students of Jammu Campus.

Neeraj further said that the campus has no facilities for students and staff and their was no permanent staff.

He further claimed that there were no Vedic, Manuscriptology, Music, Ayurvedic and Physical Departments.

He added that Vidyarthi Parishad had putforth its demands to the Vice-Chancellor of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan from time to time but he deliberately ignored it.

He warned that their agitation would continue until their demands were fulfilled.

The students also burnt the effigy of Vice-Chancellor. Vinay Sharma, Rajesh Sharma, Rohit Sharma, Sushant Sharma, Rajesh Dogra, Vivek Pandit, Amit Kesar, Sunil Kumar, Amit Kumar, Deep Kumar, Manga Ram, Neeraj Sharma and Sandeep Khajuria were also present on the occasion.

Valedictory function of seminar held

The valedictory function of two-day long seminar organised by Government Degree College, Paloura in collaboration with Gandhian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Jammu held today.

Dr S S Beloeria, Vice-Chancellor, Central University, Jammu was the chief guest on the occasion.

In his address, Dr Beloeria said non-violence and truth are the two principles to solve all problems and challenges in the world successfully.

Prof Savita Singh, former Director of Gandhi Samiti and Darshan Samiti in her valedictory note dwelt on the life of Mahatama Gandhi.

More than 36 papers were presented and deliberated upon in different sessions which include "Major Conflict and World Peace", "Population, Poverty, Pollution and Proliferation of Armaments" and "Conflict between India and Pakistan".

HC stays Vigilance proceedings against SSP

High Court (HC) today directed Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vigilance Organisation Jammu (VOJ) not to proceed against Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) City South DySP Mohan Lal Kaith in a complaint filed by alleged land grabber Gola Shah.

Justice Hasnain Massodi of J&K High Court Jammu Wing today directed SSP Vigilance that not to proceed in the matter against DySP Mohan Lal Kaith till next date of hearing. A complaint filed by Ravinder Gupta alias Gola Shah was forward by Special Judge Anticorruption, Jammu.

Mohan Lal Kaith felt aggrieved with the order dated February 23, 2012 of Special Judge Anticorruption Jammu whereby Special Court has forwarded the complaint filed by Gola Shah against DySP to SSP VOJ for verification of allegations to the extent of agreement or attempt to pay and receive illegal gratification by the accused and further necessary action under law.

The petitioner submitted that 14 criminal cases are pending investigation against Gola Shah in Police Stations under the jurisdiction of the petitioner. The petitioner is one of the members of Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the authorities to investigate the matter and that the complaint filed with Special Judge Anticorruption was intended to prevent DySP from discharging his statutory duties and influence the investigation supervised by the petitioner. The fact that the petitioner is associated with the investigation of the cases against Ravinder Gupta echoed in the order of Special Judge Anticorruption dated February 23, 2012, the petition added.

Hurra Ashtami celebrated in jammu

Hurra Ashtami was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety today.

In this connection a religious function was held at Swami Kumar Ji Geeta Satsangh Ashram Muthi Camp in which a large number of people took part.

On the occasion Swami Kumar Ji gave religious discourses and highlighted the significance of Hurrah Ashtami.

The Bhajan Kirtan was also held in the Ashram which will continue for entire night.

Another function was held at K P Sabha Ambphalla where a large number of people drawn from different parts of Jammu participated. The pooja archana and bhajan kirtan was held by devotees. They were served with prashad in the evening.

On the occasion of Hurra Ashtami a religious function was held at Sharika Peeth Sanstha (Koshur Bhawan), Subash Nagar today. Large number of devotees attended the function.

Jammu Srinagar highway opens partially

Vaishno Devi pilgrimage resumes, 200 ill in Banihal 

As pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi resumed this morning after a night-long halt, one-way traffic was restored at Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Due to outbreak of viral fever, at-least 200 people fell ill in Banihal villages in absence of medicare and doctors.Reports from Reasi said that pilgrimage to Mata Vaishnodevi resumed this morning after a night-long halt due to extreme cold and snowfall around the cave shrine in the Trikuta hills.“Yatra has begun this morning as routine. It was suspended last evening due to extreme cold triggered by heavy snowfall in the shrine area and enroute,” official reports said.“Yatra is going on smoothly. There is no problem to pilgrims,” reports said, adding that there was heavy snowfall in and around the cave shrine triggering extreme cold wave conditions yesterday. The shrine and its adjoining Trikuta hills received the season's first snowfall on January 6.

Despite cold wave conditions, the pilgrimage was going on till last evening, but no one was allowed from the Katra base camp towards the shrine later.Our correspondent Khawaja Sharjeel reports from Banihal that after two days the 300-km long National Highway re-opened for one-way trafic, today. All the stranded 115 vehicles carrying essential commodities which where stranded at Chanderkot and Ramban were allowed to move towards Kashmir at about 5 PM today. 120 vehicles carrying essential commodities crossed Jawahar Tunnel at 9 PM.BEACON authorities removed snow on one side at National Highway early today and completed the job at 2:30 PM upto Jawahar tunnel. Meanwhile, bulldozers were pressed into service to remove landslides at Gangru Ramsu at about 4:30 PM and then traffic was allowed to move towards Kashmir.

Reports from Trigam, Charwari Nallah, Put Nallah, Kacharbass, Padder Ara, Ara, Takri, Guri, Gunz, Kumbla, Thakdhar Ara, Ahma and Tragan revealed that some viral infection had spread in these areas. People are suffering from cough and fever. At least 200 people have suffered due to this viral infection, official reports said.The people infected by viral fever are forced to move on foot for at-least 4 kilometers to reach the Primary Health Center (PHC) Khari. It was learnt that viral infection occured due to non-availability of drinking water and use of snow melted water. No doctors or medicare facilities were available in these areas.When contacted, Tehsidhar Banihal Niyaz Ahmed Wani, he said PHE department and Health department authorities have been asked to provide necessary facilities to the people and DDC Ramban has also been informed. He told KTNS that all departments like PHE, Health, PDD and PWD are monitoring the situation keenly.

Due to heavy rains, landslides were reported at Seri Ramban, Maroog, Nashri, Digdool, Khooni Nallah and Panthal. A snow avalanche also struck at Nachllana causing no loss to life and property which was cleared about 4:30 PM. Two residential houses were reportedly damaged at Ramban and Parnot besides one Government Middle School at Trana Khari.Power was also restored after one day by PDD Banihal at town and adjoining villages of Banihal incliding Chanjloo, Malwat, Gujnarh Krawah, Parastan, Phago, Chamalwas, Neel, Pogal, Ukhall, Panthal, Khari, Trigam and Trana. The clearance of snow at Banihal link roads was also started by PWD Banihal and only the roads under IRCON are yet to be cleared except Kaskoot Banihal.
A big Chinar tree at Kaskoot suffered cracks and there are chances of damage to two big homes and Jama Masjid Kaskoot, in case the tree collapses. People of Kaskoot requested Tehsidhar Banihal and district administration for help so that heavy loss can be prevented timely.

Police communique claimed that heavy avalanches took place in Nachalana, Sherbibi and Shermili Water Fall areas due to recent heavy rainfall. To expedite the widening of the national highway, police alongwith about 100 personnel along with spades and other equipments reached the spot and widened the path for safer passage.

The communique further claimed that cops rescued nine migrant families in Sangaldan area and these were shifted to PWD building near Sangaldan. Couple of families were shifted from Barakund and Hall area to safer places and 10 families from village Kurzi, 5 families from village Hargam, 1 family each from village Mangit and Aramdhaka.

The cops evacuated 3 LMVs from snow prone area and rescued 12 passengers in Ramsoo, 4 LMVs from snow prone area and rescued 16 passengers in Nowgam while the track was cleared by the police leading to Masjid at Banihal.

Passengers were accommodated at safer places in Batote and Ramban areas and 260 loadcarrier vehicles were allowed to move towards valley.In Jammu stranded passengers protested at General Bus Stand demanding early arrangements for their shifting to respective destinations.

Hunt for new JU Vice Chancellor

Search committee headed by Prof G K Chadha constituted to find a successor to Prof Varun Sahni, Jammu University Vice-Chancellor has zeroed in on three names.

Reliable sources said that three persons, who have been short-listed for this prestigious post, included Prof Rajive Gupta, former Director Colleges, University of Jammu, Prof M P Singh Ishar from Guru Nanak Dev University and P S Ahuja, Director CSIR Lab, Palampur.

The incumbent Vice-Chancellor Prof Varun Sahni’s tenure has already expired in the month of December, 2011, but he got extension under the rules of Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act, 1969.

Governor NN Vohra, in his capacity as the Chancellor of University, is likely to select the new Vice-Chancellor from this list of short-listed candidates by the search panel. 

Photography workshop at Jammu University

A week-long photography workshop organised by the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu got underway at Seminar Hall, Department of Environmental Sciences here today.

Neeru Sharma, Co-Chairperson, Campus Cultural Committee, was the chief guest on the occasion.

She lauded the efforts of Department of Students Welfare for taking initiative to enhance the abilities in photography.

Earlier, Prof N K Tripathi, Dean Students Welfare, JU, delivered the welcome address.

The objective of conducting the workshop was to provide a platform for students to educate them and refine their photography abilities.

The workshop is being held under the supervision of Arvind Gupta, Yogesh Manhas and Nitin Kanotra.
