President Jamiat Ahli Hadith, Maulana Showkat Ahmad was killed in a mine blast near the Ahli Hadith mosque at Gaw Kadal-Maisuma in the afternoon. The incident occurred at about 12:15 PM as the Maulana was about to enter the mosque for offering the Friday prayers.
Eyewitnesses told News Agency that as soon as Mr. Showkat entered the gate of the mosque and put one of his feet in the mosque the mine tied with a bicycle went off and exploded with a big bang. The Jamiat Ahli Hadith President was seriously injured and was taken by his followers and the others present there to the SMHS hospital. He was declared dead by the doctors at the hospital and soon after this his body was taken to the Ahli Hadith mosque at Gaw Kadal.
Police and security forces have moved to blast site and security has been beefed up across the Srinagar city. The situation became tense in the entire area with schools, colleges and other commercial establishments getting closed. Shopkeepers downed their shutters and in no time the city centre area of Lal Chowk more so Maisuma, Gaw Kadal and adjoining areas wore a deserted look.
