Walkouts over refugees and tourism issue

The Lower House of State Legislature today witnessed walk-outs by the members of Jammu-based Opposition over the issues of West Pakistan refugees and neglect of several areas in the tourism sector.

Raising the issue of West Pakistan refugees as soon as the proceedings of the House began, MLA from Jammu West Assembly segment, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, said that refugees were forced to march towards Delhi to raise their voice as the State Government has failed to meet their aspirations.

Demanding citizenship rights to the West Pakistan refugees, he said, "it is unfortunate that State Government has failed to provide them justice, which they have been clamoring for during the past several decades".

He was joined by all the MLAs of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), National Panthers Party (NPP) and Jammu State Morcha, who left their seats and moved towards the front row. "It is pity that Government is mum over the issue of citizenship rights of refugees", they regretted and asked the Government to make its stand clear on the issue.

As there was no response from the Government, the agitated MLAs started raising slogans against the Government. Slogans like "Refugeeyon Ka Masla Hal Karo", "West Pakistan Refugueeyon Ka Masla Hal Karo" and Refugee Virodhi Sarkar Hai Hai" rented the House.

After protesting against the Government for sometime, all the members of Jammu-based Opposition staged walk-out of the House accusing the Government of not showing any interest towards the genuine demands of the West Pakistan refugees.

Another walk-out was witnessed on the issue of tourism during the Question Hour. "Bani-Basohli areas have rich potential of tourism but the Government has neglected these areas", MLAs from these areas—Jagdish Raj Sapolia and Lal Chand said.

"Due to the neglect, the tourism activities have virtually come to an end in these areas", they said. As they were not allowed to further raise their issue, some more BJP rebel MLAs came to the support of Sapolia and Lal Chand and after protesting for sometime near the front row, all the BJP rebel MLAs staged walk-out.

On this Speaker remarked in a lighter vein, "take Ashok Khajuria along with you".

Earlier, in response to the question of MLA from Basohli, Jagdish Raj Sapolia, Minister for Tourism and Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora, said, "no work was taken up for promotion of tourism at Dhar-Mahanpur during the last two years".
