Wrong information provided under RTI

Next time, if you intend to file an application under RTI for seeking any information, ensure to verify the details provided to you as there are chances that you are being misled by providing wrong information.
Following the disconnection of landlines
connections in his area, Showkat Ahmad
from Turka Tachloo village of Anantnag
filed an application in the BSNL office
seeking information regarding the non
functionality of landlines in his area.
Though Showkat received a prompt
response for the concerned authorities,
he alleges the information furnished was
wrong.
“Some years back, BSNL had allotted
10-15 connection under OYT and non
OYT category in our village. We had paid
money for it. But for a year now, most of
the connections are disconnected while
few are working,” said Showkat.
He said after making repeated complaints
at the concerned offices and seeking
reason for disconnection, he decided
to file RTI in this regard. “But they provided
me with wrong information.”
Showkat had filed RTI seeking information
about the names of landlines, STD/
VPT/PCO subscribes in the village of
Turka Tachloo, the number of connection
functional and non functional in his village
and also asked for reasons for not
activating BSNL connections in the said
village.
In reply to his RTI, BSNL has stated
that there are no subscribes of landlines,
STD/VPT or PCO in Turka village. It
says that no connections are functional
in the village.
Responding to the query about the
number of non functional connections,
BSNL replies “NIL” (since no connection
is provided).”
“The said village is technically non
feasible” is the response against reasons
for not activating the BSNL connection
in the village.
News Agency is in possession of landlines
bills of some connection which have
been functional at Turka Village.
Even the online directory of BSNL
displays details of connection at Turka
Tachloo village. Showkat submitted an application at the BSNL office, informing the office about the wrong information being provided.
“I also provided them with the evidence. I wanted them to rectify their mistake. I gave them my contact number and all details but they never turned up with anything,” said Showkat.
