Chidambaram pays obeisance at Vaishnodevi


Union Home Minister P Chidambaram today began his day-long visit to this city to assess the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir by paying obeisance at the cave shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi.

Chidambaram, who arrived here this morning, was received by Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand and Minister of State for Home Nasir Aslam Wani at the Jammu airport.

The Home Minister, who was flanked by Governor N N Vohra, flew to Sanji Chat base helipad in Trikuta hills- abode of cave shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi- from the airport.

He later paid obeisance at the cave shrine, officials said adding that he returned back to Jammu where a high-level security review meeting chaired by him is underway.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Director General of Police (DGP) Kuldeep Khoda besides senior officers of the Army, Para military forces and intelligence agencies are taking part in the meeting.

Chidambaram is scheduled to hold a meeting with the Governor at Raj Bhavan and later meet delegations of Congress leaders of Jammu and Kashmir headed by JKPCC Chief Saif-ud-Din Soz besides a delegation of Sikh leaders.
