NPP MLAs Stage Walkout

Alleging discrimination with the Jammu region in the development of tourism sector, National Panthers Party (NPP) MLAs today staged walk-out from the Lower House.

"There is no equal distribution of funds for the development of tourist spots, promoting pilgrimage tourism and developing tourism villages", Legislature Party leader of NPP, Harshdev Singh, said during Question Hour.

He further said, "the places like Dudu-Basantgarh, Chountra Mata and Narsingh temple can be developed into good tourism spots. In 2004, under PMRP development of Pinger and Dalsar was announced but nothing was done on ground", adding "there is arbitrary allocation of funds in tourism sector and not on equitable note".

The NPP MLA sought to know from the Government whether these areas would be considered for creation of infrastructure in view of huge potential for attracting tourists.

As the Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Taj Mohi-ud-Din, who was replying to the supplementaries and main question of Vikar Rasool in the absence of Tourism Minister, Nawang Rigzin Jora, stated that no place of Udhampur district fall in the list of new tourist spots identified for the development, the NPP MLAs turned infuriated.

Harshdev Singh joined by party legislators—Balwant Singh Mankotia and Yash Pal Kundal left their respective seats in protest and started agitating against the Government.

"Udhampur district has always been ignored in the tourism sector", Mankotia said, adding "there is a pick and choose policy as a result of which locations having potential of being developed into good tourist spots remain unexplored".

After holding protest for sometime, the NPP MLAs staged walk-out from the House.
