Seminar on Lifelong Learning and Higher Education

Minister for Higher Education, Labour and Employment J&K, Abdul Gani Malik, today underlined the importance of lifelong learning and stressed the need to study in detail the Central Education Policies and then put them in the frameworks carefully for the upliftment of Society.

The Minister's comments came at an inauguration function of two-day national seminar on 'Lifelong Learning and Higher Education' being organised by the Department of Lifelong Learning, University of Jammu, in the seminar hall of the Department of Computer Science and IT.

"Lifelong Learning is very important in the emerging societies which are knowledge-based and are constantly changing," said the Minister adding that the universities have an important role in equipping the student and non-student to adopt to changes and learn new skills in accordance with the new demands of work.

Vice Chancellor JU, Professor MP Singh Ishar in his presidential address said the society is facing a big problem of low employability and on the other hand miniscule jobs are being operated by unskilled labourers. In order to impart and upgrade their knowledge and skill, the role of Department of Lifelong learning comes into being.

Director, Group of Adult Education, School of Social Sciences, JNU and Director, Department of Lifelong Learning, Poonam Dhawan also spoke on the occasion.

Organising secretary of the Seminar and Assistant Director, DLL in his address informed that ten technical sessions will be held during the two-day seminar in which experts from different States will deliberate on four major issues- globalization and concurrent challenges in Higher education, lifelong learning and sustainable development, role of ICT's in lifelong learning through open and distance learning.

Professor NVR Kapali, Director DLL, University of Madras, Professor AR Supriya, Incharge Director, DLL, University of Kerala, Professor AG Madhosh, Kashmir University, Krishan Khanna, Chairman, India Watch Foundation, Professor Lokesh, Professor Neelu Rohmetra, Professor Jasbir Singh, Professor Neeru Sharma, Professor Abha Chauhan, delegated from various states, students and scholars were also present on the occasion.

The welcome address was given by Dr Poonam Dhawan while the vote of thanks was presented by Vivek Sharma.
